Breast health usually bring to mind checking for lumps. Though small, your nipples are an important part of overall breast health too. The good news? Checking your nipples is quick, easy, and can be done at home.
👀 Step 1: Look
Stand in front of a mirror and take a quick look at both nipples.
Watch for:
Changes in colour or shape
Redness, flaking, or crusting
Dimpling or puckering
A nipple that suddenly turns inward
Everyone’s body is different. What matters most is noticing changes from your normal.
✋ Step 2: Feel
Gently touch around the nipple and the darker area around it (the areola).
Notice if there is:
Pain, tenderness or unusual sensitivity
Lumps or thickened skin
Persistent itching, burning or irritation
Some tenderness can be normal at certain times, but ongoing pain should be checked.
💧 Step 3: Check for Discharge
Gently squeeze the nipple and see if any fluid appears.
Milky discharge can be normal during pregnancy or breastfeeding
Clear, bloody, or unexpected discharge, especially from one nipple, should be checked by a doctor

🩺 When to See a Doctor
It’s a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional if you notice any unusual or persistent changes to your nipples or areolae, especially if they appear suddenly or affect only one side.
Change in nipple colour:
The nipple becomes red or purplish, which may indicate a circulation issue
Colour changes are accompanied by itching, discharge, or other symptoms
Only one nipple changes colour without an obvious reason
Change in nipple size or shape:
One nipple or areola changes in size or shape while the other remains the same
Change in nipple texture or skin:
Flaking or scaling skin
Open sores or wounds that don’t heal
Thickened skin
Redness, warmth, or swelling
Bumps on the nipple or areola when you are not pregnant, or bumps that feel firm and do not move
Unusual nipple discharge:
Discharge that is bloody or clear
Fluid that comes from only one nipple
Discharge accompanied by a lump, nipple pain, or changes in skin texture
Persistent nipple discomfort:
Ongoing tenderness or pain
Itching that doesn’t improve
Pain without an obvious cause, such as breastfeeding or hormonal changes
New nipple inversion:
Nipples that were previously outward-facing suddenly become flat or inverted
A sudden inverted nipple on only one side
